Have you ever found yourself caught in a dilemma when faced with a pile of technical construction drawings filled with professional calculations and a long list of materials, decorations, and furniture, trying to envision what your new home will look like after renovation? To be honest, for someone like me who isn’t completely familiar with interior design, it’s hard to imagine at all.
3D renderings make it easier for me to visualize the new space and provide a more intuitive representation. But you might be wondering, what exactly are 3D renderings? Don’t worry; I’ll answer that question in this article. I’ll also discuss the benefits of having one for your renovation project. There’s no time to waste, so let’s dive right in!
What are 3D Renderings?
3D renderings are essentially high-quality images that provide a 3D view of what a new interior space will look like. These images are created using software such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, and Revit. These are some of the tools interior designers use to create 3D renderings. Here is a 3D visual image we completed for one of our projects.
Benefits of 3D Renderings
Having 3D renderings created by an interior designer or a 3D rendering company is actually a small investment with significant and intuitive returns. Here are 4 major advantages of using 3D renderings for your renovation project:
1. Intuitively Compare Options
You probably know that renovating your home is a significant investment. Because of this, you don’t want the new interior of your home to end up looking like something you don’t like. With 3D visualizations, you can compare different interior design options (such as materials, fabrics, colors, furniture, etc.). This way, you can find the products that best suit your lifestyle and style preferences.
2. View Structural Elements
3D renderings not only show how materials, furniture, fixtures, and appliances complement each other and the new interior layout, but they also indicate the structural elements of the property. For example, if you want to do a rear extension, you can visually see the placement and appearance of steel beams and columns in the new interior space from the 3D image.

3. Better Understand the Project
It's difficult to grasp the impact of changing the internal space layout by only looking at 2D floor plans. Therefore, 3D renderings provide clients with an excellent opportunity to get a clear sense of it. For example, if you want to remove some partition walls between a utility room, kitchen, and dining area, a 3D image helps you understand how the more open layout will feel after the walls are removed.
4. Save Time
The creation of 3D renderings is based on the client's basic requirements for the project and the interior designer's new ideas. By showcasing the images, designers can clearly explain the design to clients, avoiding misunderstandings about the design concept. Furthermore, the progress of the remaining complex stages in the FF&E (Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment) process is also not affected.

The Process of Creating 3D Renderings
As I mentioned earlier, interior designers use software to create 3D renderings for their clients. However, it’s not as simple as you might think; in fact, producing a 3D rendering is a rather complex process. So, let me explain each step involved in creating a 3D rendering.
Step 1: 3D Modeling
Using floor plans and elevation drawings with detailed measurements, each room's 3D space is recreated in the software. The primary goal of this phase is to present everything in accurate proportions. Photos of the property's existing interior space are also used to enhance the accuracy of the 3D rendering.
Step 2: Materials and FF&E
Once the 3D space is created, materials and products selected from the FF&E (Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment) list are added. This is a crucial step because the interior designer needs to address two key questions:
Do the furniture, fixtures, and equipment fit the space?
Are they proportionate to the interior space?

Step 3: Texturing
Once all the materials and objects fit into the space and are proportionate to the interior, it’s time to make them look as realistic as possible by adding textures and colors. To ensure they achieve a photorealistic quality, designers will use reference images that show the objects from different angles.
Step 4: Lighting
Adding light sources, whether natural sunlight or artificial lighting, is the final stage in creating 3D renderings. Designers experiment with different lighting positions and angles to shape the image. The reason is that different light directions affect the atmosphere of each room and the way details like materials and furniture appear in the rendering.
